Shane Tubrid Furniture by design – A Guide to caring for your bespoke piece of furniture

All our furniture is hand crafted using traditional techniques and modern processes combined,

Below are recommendations for the after-care of your furniture.

  • Use coasters, place mats and tablecloths to protect the finish.
  • A light dust with a dry, soft cotton cloth is suitable for day-to-day cleaning for all surfaces.
  • Wipe spills immediately with a damp cloth.
  • Avoid dragging objects across finished surfaces.
  • Use protective felt on the feet or bases of objects placed on the surface to prevent scratching.
  • Re-treat waxed or oiled furniture periodically.
  • If possible avoid positioning furniture in direct sunlight as this can cause the finish to fade.
  • Positioning furniture next to heaters, radiators or vents may cause the area directly affected to move or crack.

Hard-wax Oil based Finishes Care

  • We recommend not to place hot cups & plates or wet items directly onto an oiled surface.
  • Using felt backed table-mats and coasters will reduce any direct heat or moisture from damaging the surface,
  • Avoid dragging any objects across a tabletop as they may have sharp surface that will mark or scratch the finish.
  • Wipe any spills immediately with a damp cloth.Red wine should be removed immediately as the tannin’s in red wine will penetrate the majority of finishes.
  • An Oil based finish will require maintenance over time.

Lacquer Finishes Care

  • Lacquer is a clear durable finish that protects the wood while allowing natural colour and grain patterns to show through.
  • A lacquered finish requires very little maintenance and has a high resistance to stain.
  • Lacquer is brittle and can be chipped and dented; avoid impacts, knocks or dropping hard objects onto a lacquered surface.
  • Surfaces can be wiped clean with a slightly damp cloth. Severe damage to the surface can be resolved with expert advice. please contact us for a quote.

Working with Hardwood,

  • All Hardwood reacts to light – this is called oxidation.
  • Cherry darkens easily whereas Walnut will lighten over time,  Maple may yellow when exposed to sunlight.
  • Your furniture MUST be shaded from the effects of light, by the use of blinds/curtains in full sun.
  • You may notice that if objects placed on a surface are moved after a period of time, there will be a light or dark patch beneath it,
  • Take care to rotate placement of objects on cherry surfaces; even moving pieces slightly will avoid shadows developing.
  • If this happens, remove the object; the light should eventually even out the surface colour.
  • Solid wood, being natural materials, will react to changes in temperature and humidity with movement, and doors and drawers may also move as the pieces ‘settle’ into the floor.
  • Seasonal changes such as extreme heat will dry the timber (causing some shrinkage) and increased humidity will swell timber (drawers/doors may stick with excessive humidity).
  • In air conditioned and/or centrally heated environments, we recommend that the  temperature should be set at 18-19 degrees Celsius.
  • If you find your pieces reacting to seasonal changes, you may want to consider fine tuning the temperature and humidity in your home/office.
  • Please contact us with any questions regarding movement.
  • Sometimes, despite best efforts, accidents happen, and the furniture may acquire dents or the occasional scratch.
